My name is Olivia Patterson (She, Her, Hers) and I have the privilege of serving in the Howard/Dawson Administration this year as your Director of Health and Safety.
I am a third-year Political Science major with a double minor in Spanish and Communications. I was born in Houston, Texas, and raised in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. My position as Director of Health and Safety for Student Government Association contributes holistically to maintaining a safe, open, and inviting campus that all Appalachian students may grow and thrive within. This year, I will work towards the goal of creating a living and learning environment here at Appalachian State in which every student feels physically and emotionally safe. I will continue to work to destigmatize the process asking for help when one’s mental health requires it, thus promoting all of the many resources offered on campus that are vital to supporting student well-being.
As your representative, I strongly encourage you to contact me with any issues relevant to Health and Safety that you feel could be improved upon here at Appalachian. I believe that holding difficult and open dialogues about ongoing problems both on campus and within our society is an integral step towards finding solutions. Trying earnestly to understand one another’s struggles is key to creating a more just world, and I hope to make Appalachian’s campus a safer place by strengthening those conversations and uniting communally to find answers. Let’s work together and continue to be Mountaineer Strong!
